Reddit Karma is the the scoreboard of reddit — a reward earned for posting popular content. It also comes in two flavors link karma and comment karma. You gain karma points when you get your links and comments upvoted. And you lose it when your links and comments are downvoted to a number lower than zero. All of these votes a calculated and the cumulative is known as your “karma score” or just “karma”. You can view a user’s karma at the top of the sidebar in their Reddit profile page.
So why the hell is karma good for?
While some reddit users dismiss karma, cheekily referring to it as “imaginary internet points” but I think it’s a useful tool. It’s the best metric regular users have available to them to determine, at a glance, if someone is a valued member of this site. If someone has lots of karma–either link or comment–that means that user has contributed lots of popular content to the site. Note that it might not be “good” content but it was nonetheless upvoted. You have to meet a minimum karma score to post on certain subreddits– such as /r/videos, which required 10 links and comments karma. This was done in an effort to combat spam from the newly created accounts. You also have to meet a minimum karma score before being allowed to join a few private subreddits– such as /r/centuryclub and /r/funnyvideos etc.
In a nutshell…
Karma has no value outside the reddit and its value inside is nebulous at best, but it does have its occasional uses.
Further, Reddit karma is one of the gamification techniques used to engage users busy on reddit. It’s pretty similar as Quora credits – You get more karma when your posts/comments get upvoted, and lose some when they get downvoted. There are two key differences I can think of:
- Reddit karma can not be ‘redeemed’ for anything, even on website. Quora credits can be used to ask questions, for A2As, and for promoting content (Although, for a number of users, credits they have accumulated are enough to be able to do all of that without really caring for their credit reserve)
- Reddit karma is displayed publicly. This means that everyone who wants to know how much karma a user has accumulated, can readily find this out. So redditors take pride in their karma (kind of like having a high score at an arcade) and karma is often associated with respect on reddit.
So essentially, both Quora credits and Reddit karma take some aspects of real world currency. While credits focus more on the aspect of purchasing stuff with money, karma has more to do with flaunting your riches.
refers to points received from upvotes, which are the Reddit equivalents of “likes” similar to Facebook. You receive approximately one point of karma for each upvote and you lose about one point of karma for each downvote.
But first, you have to understand the different types of karma. You can receive different types of karma from the following types of posts:
- Post Karma – Posting an external link or creating a text only post and then receiving upvotes will grant you “post” karma or points karma.
- Comment Karma – Posting a comment on an existing post or link and receiving upvotes will result in “comment” karma points.
Benefits of Reddit Karma
