What is Google RankBrain Algorithm? How RankBrain Works?

In the Last year Google announced that Google RankBrain Algorithm was their third most important ranking factor. Google says, in the few months it has been deployed that RankBrain Algorithm has become the third-most important signal contributing to the result of a search query.

And as per Google refines RankBrain Algorithm is going to become more important algorithm in 2018.

The question is: What is #Google RankBrain Algorithm? How Google RankBrain Works and how can you optimize for it?

Google RankBrain Algorithm: a very-Simple Explanation

Basically, Google RankBrain Algorithm is a machine learning system which helps Google to sort their search results. You think it’s complicated but it is not. RankBrain Algorithm simply measures how users interact with the search result and then RankBrain ranks them accordingly. For example, let’s say you search for “Banana Milkshake” in Google.

Google Rankbrain Algorithm

The any number result looks especially enticing for you suppose #5. So you go and quickly click on it. When you get there, wow! It’s the best darn article about banana Milkshake you have ever read. So you devour every word peacefully. Google RankBrain Algorithm is going to take note and likely give that #5 result a rankings boost.

On the other hand, let’s say that you do the same search and this time, you click on the #1 result because of its ranking. But the content is horrible. So you bounce from the page after a few seconds and you click on the #5 result to find something about banana Milkshake that’s actually worth reading.

Google RankBrain Algorithm will also notice this and if enough people quickly bounce from the #1 result then Google will boot #5 result from the #1 spot. We can see, Google RankBrain focuses on two things:

  1. How much time someone spends on your page (Dwell Time)
  2. The percentage (%) of people that click on your result (Click Through Rate)

Let’s break each of these down.

Google RankBrain Algorithm and Dwell Time

Dwell Time=how much time a Google searcher spends on your page.

As it turns out, RankBrain pays a lot of attention to Dwell Time.

In fact, recently the head of Google Brain in Canada confirmed that Google uses Dwell Time as a ranking signal. He stated that Google RankBrain measures when someone clicks on a page and stays on that page and also when they go back. A recent industry study by SearchMetrics supports this statement. They found that the average Dwell Time for top 10 Google result is 3 minutes and 10 seconds. If you have spent any time digging through your Google Analytics, you know that a 3+ minute Dwell Time is legit. it’s no coincidence that pages with awesome Dwell Time tend to rank best. In fact, RankBrain Algorithm is up-ranking these pages for that exact reason. Thus, by its functionality, it comes close to Google Panda and Google Penguin but less dangerous relating to SEO.
